Recent Projects

(Client IP and NDAs restrict the use of actual images in some cases)

Cyto-Mine® - Single Cell Sorting Instrument

I worked on this instrument, as Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, from concept to PPU, when contracted by TTP plc. This involved: Micro-fluidic valving and control, bespoke Optical assemblies with precision machined parts, Stepper motor driven linear actuators, Sheet metalwork, Thermal control. I then contracted direct for Sphere Fluidics, on the 'Transfer to Manufacture' stage.

Life Science Instruments & Medical Devices

Also whilst contracting for TTP plc I worked as Lead Mechanical Design Engineer on various projects, with combinations of Micro-fluidics, Compact miniature valving, Optics, Fluid and gas control, Electro-mechanical mechanisms, Control panels, Stage processing. From conceptual Test rigs to Pre-production units.

Drug Delivery

Whilst contracting For Bespak Innovation, I worked as a Product Designer on a novel range of Gas operated auto-injectors, from concept to production. I am named on various patents that followed the design process.

Carburetors and Distributors

I have been working directly with Stromberg Carburetors from the outset, on the re-design and re-manufacture of 1940's vehicle parts for the Hot-rod market. Initially carburetors, and more recently, a range of distributors.

I just returned from Indiana seeing the Auburn run. Your work runs beautifully! In fact they said it has never run so well, and might have other projects for us.

Thanks again for excellent service and response to our needs. We have used quite a few CAD designers in recent years and you are the best we have used. Your work is spot on and exactly what I ask for, and you are always there to help out with any queries.

August 2017 - Yesterday a few of us visited Sphere for a ‘social’ visit and to have a look at the Cyto-Mine Beta units. Well done everybody! It’s pretty impressive to go from concept to production units, of this complexity, coming out of the factory in about a year, and it’s been a great team effort. December 2018 - Cyto-mine has been awarded 1st place in 'The Scientist' Top 10 Innovations of 2018

Good to see another LS group product launched on the market….. the Pall Corp “iCellis Nano” is a development-scale, single-use bioreactor dock, intended for adherent cell cultures and virus production. The Nano allows you to develop the process for scale-up using its larger brother, the iCellis 500. Congrats and thanks to Seb and the team!

Just thought I would feedback how positive I thought the meeting with Domino was yesterday afternoon. They seem very pleased with the design that has been created for the new printer. Well done!

Well Done! - Bespak is one of three to win SBRI award - Bespak Europe Ltd, Cambridge-based, developing a new bolus drug delivery device using novel delivery technology that is simple and easy-to-use and will bring cost savings to the NHS. With phase 1 technical feasibility project successfully completed, the development work in phase 2 will focus on creating a device which is ready for clinical trials and commercialisation.

Just thought I would send you a short email to say that it’s been a great pleasure working with you for the last 2 years. You’re going to be missed from the team!! It’s been great to work alongside someone with your skills and experience with the added bonus of your willingness to help out on whatever and wherever you can.

Article in Royal Academy of Engineering - Ingenia Magazine -Issue 79 June 2019 - Surprised by how little change there had been in wheelchair development over the years, former toolmaker Mike Spindle challenged himself to design and build a high-tech, lightweight wheelchair that could be created bespoke for each user. He spoke to Dominic Joyeux about the evolution of his gamechanging design. The CAD-based design took many months, using thousands of pre-plotted data points. Spindle refers to it as “the world’s worst 3D join-the-dots puzzle”. The design was assisted by UK company Computool, which digitally massaged the final curves into place to perfect the original forms. A significant issue was that it was impossible to know whether all the surfaces were smooth until the actual seat was manufactured. Fortunately, Computool’s programme created a 3D model where surfaces could be rendered with a mirror finish that easily showed any lumps and bumps.
